Shadow of the Wall

by Pierre Reverdy, c. 1918

translated by Greg Baysans

An eye stabbed by a quill

Tears tumble from the moon

_ A lake

The earth returns to a sack

_ The night

Weeping willows display that same signal

A whitened path beneath us

The winter wonderland is blue

_ Your toes tingle

Two courthouse squares resemble

Shadows line dancing among

Animal quacks and void purrs

_ Voices

Rolling down the highway

_ Rain drops
